Dear Miraloma Community,
Welcome to Miraloma Elementary School — I’m so excited that you’re here!
My name is Shelley Reid, the principal at Miraloma. This is my first year as a principal, but my third year as an SFUSD administrator, and my 20th year as an educator (Kinder and First grade teacher). I am also a parent within the Miraloma community, with a 3rd grader in the 3-5 SDC Autism Focus class. It is a pleasure to be a part of Miraloma as both a parent and a leader.
As the new principal this year, I’m excited for our community to both lean into our existing practices and to challenge ourselves to create new experiences for our students and families. In the past few years, Miraloma has worked on expanding equity and being an anti-racist space that cultivates true belonging for all. We will continue this work as a school culture, being student- and family-centered along with challenging ourselves towards the most equitable practices. This year, we launched the school year with our “Be a Dragon” schoolwide norms. These norms include the district's Positive School Behavior Intervention System (PBIS) norms: Be Safe, Be Respectful, Be Responsible and our community added Be Inclusive. For us, being inclusive holds great importance for our historically silenced and resilient communities. As a school, we will develop this ideal for all staff, students, and families. No matter your background you have a place at Miraloma!
At Miraloma, you will experience many amazing qualities that make our school unique. You will be welcomed and supported by our dedicated teachers, para educators, social worker, administrative clerk, custodial staff, and other support providers. I see the dedication that our teachers bring to school each day, from those who have been here for decades, to those being mentored as they start their teaching journeys. Students at Miraloma engage in rigorous academic classes along with various enrichment opportunities — Dance, Art and Music are highlights. In addition, you will also be welcomed by our PTA who is like-minded in supporting our community through multiple engagements and fundraising. We are a team! It is our responsibility and commitment to provide engaging learning experiences that include joy and lifelong learning for our students. Whether it be joyful classrooms, energizing Morning Circles, Mileage Club or community engagements, we hope you find a home at Miraloma!
It is an honor to welcome you to Miraloma Elementary.
In community,
Rochelle Gumpert (Shelley Reid - preferred name), Principal
